Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western New York
Who We Are
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western New York is a community supported organization dedicated to children and their families by:
- “Keeping families close” by providing lodging and emotional support for families of children receiving medical treatment in Buffalo.
- Reaching out to our community by supporting programs that benefit children.
We believe that when you change a child’s life, you change a family’s, which can change a community, and ultimately the world.
We strive to be part of that change and part of the solution in improving the lives of children and their families by providing programs that strengthen families during their most difficult or challenging times.
RMHC of WNY is responsible for its own fundraising and program priorities, and is 100% funded by generous donations from the local Western New York community.
When you support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western New York, you are giving families what they need most: each other.
With such a variety of ways to help, you can be assured your support will be directly and immediately felt by our families.
What We Do
The Buffalo Ronald McDonald House
Our cornerstone, the Buffalo Ronald McDonald House, opened in 1983 with the single focus of “Keeping families close” by providing lodging and emotional support for families of children receiving medical treatment in Buffalo. The Ronald McDonald House was built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest.
Since that time, more than 18,000 families from Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania, the country and the world, have benefited from the comfort provided by our House. Children heal better when surrounded by the comforts of home and family. RMHC of WNY keeps families close when they need each other the most.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western New York is expanding their mission beyond the House on West Ferry, and sponsoring Hospital Programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families.
The Family Lounge
Opening in November 2017, the Family Lounge at the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital will give local families as well as those from out of town our signature Ronald McDonald House hospitality. Families are welcome to stop by for some complimentary nourishment for their mind, body and spirit.
Happy Wheels Cart
Planning to launch in January 2018 at the John R Oishei Children’s Hospital, utilizing our unique Happy Wheels Cart, our Ronald McDonald House volunteers will bring our hospitality directly to families at their child’s bedside.
Keeping Families Close
Research shows that staying close by allows parents to better communicate with their child’s medical team and improves adherence to complicated treatment plans. Children heal better when surrounded by the comforts of home and family. RMHC of WNY keeps families close when they need each other the most.

Variety Club of Buffalo
Who We Are
Variety, The Children’s Charity of Buffalo and Western New York, Tent #7 works year round to raise money for the sick and handicapped children of Buffalo and Western New York. Our primary beneficiaries are the Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, The Dr. Robert Warner, M.D Center for Children with Special Needs and multiple other Children’s Charities in the Western New York Region.
Variety, The Children’s Charity was established in Pittsburgh, PA on October 10, 1927 when a group of eleven men started a social club called the Variety Club. On Christmas Eve, 1928, a baby was left on the steps of their meeting place, the Sheridan Theatre with a note attached to her blanket which read:
“Please take care of my baby. Her name is Catherine. I can no longer take care of her. I have eight others. My husband is out of work. She was born on Thanksgiving Day I have always heard of the goodness of show business peopled pray to god that you will look after her. Signed, a Heartbroken Mother.”
The eleven men adopted the girl as their “goddaughter” and named her Catherine Variety Sheridan. These eleven godfathers took it upon themselves to raise funds for her health, well-being and education. Soon after, they began raise funds for other underprivileged children.
Variety, The Children’s Charity of Buffalo and Western New York, Tent #7, was chartered on May 12, 1934 to raise funds and purchase medical equipment for sick and handicapped children in the Buffalo area. Such equipment included iron lungs, wheelchairs, leg braces and an electroencephalograh for the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. This electroencephalograph was the only one of its kind between New York City and Chicago.
The annual Variety Club Telethon began in 1962 when Dr. Robert Warner approached the Variety Club about wanting to create a rehabilitation center for children with special needs. Since then, The Variety Club Telethon has been broadcast every year as the primary fundraiser for the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation of the Variety Club of Buffalo.
What We Do
Multiple Events are held each year to help raise funds for the children of Variety. Dinner and cocktail parties are are held and supported by the Variety Club Women. Other events including a Cruise Night, Car Raffle, Polar Bear Swim and Meat Raffles are held to help us reach out goal.
All of our yearly events culminate with the annual Variety Kids Telethon, held at the Adams Mark Hotel in Downtown Buffalo, NY in March. The telethon is broadcast yearly, from 7am-7pm, on WKBW TV/DT Channel 7.
